Globalization

In order to catch an audience's attention, the scriptwriters must create a story and plot that capture the general audience. This includes people from all different types of backgrounds, ranging from categories such as social-economic status, race, age, etc. When most scriptwriters are writing their telenovelas, many are not considering the fact that non-Hispanic viewers are tuning in. Because of the advances in technology, people on the opposite of the world are able to watch telenovelas. This rising global attention to telenovelas is an indicator that proves how popular telenovelas have gotten. They are slowly rising into the Hollywood market. Telenovelas have a wide variety of genres, like American dramas, so audiences of different races are able to watch shows to their own preference. Subtitles in different languages are assisting the globalization of telenovelas. Viewers from around the world are able to empathize with characters in the various situations they are placed in. Because of the rising popularity, writers are beginning to target non-Hispanic countries. They're developing story lines that are more appealing to those outside of the Hispanic countries. Like telenovelas, Korean dramas also are rising in popularity. They are gaining a lot of interest in Hispanic countries and European countries. When I first entered college, I found out that a lot of my hall mates loved Korean dramas. They were fascinated by the culture and asked me a lot of questions about K-Dramas. Marketing for telenovelas are expanding into different networks. I recall a Korean drama website I was on advertising telenovelas. The globalization of telenovelas is spreading the Hispanic culture across the world.

  1. I found it extremely interesting when Dr. A was talking about the popularity of Korean and Turkish dramas in hispanic culture. I also had no idea people here were interested in them either so the fact your hallmates brought them up to you I find very intriguing. I also came across a website that was advertising them a few weeks ago and now it makes much more sense. That is definitely first-hand proof that the globalization of telenovelas is increasing.

  2. I personally have not seen any of the Korean dramas, but I do really enjoy telenovelas being developed into other forms of drama. For example, Ugly Betty was such a good show, but I would have never known that it was originally a telenovela. I think that this is great that globalization is occurring, moving the world to a big market economy. I could not find my show with english subtitles, which forced me to watch the show in only spanish, which fortunately I was able to understand from all the spanish classes I have taken. Globalization has influenced me into my International Business and Business Finance major because I love traveling and seeing other cultures. This FYOS was great because it gave us an opportunity to truly understand another culture through television. As globalization continues in the world, so will the production of telenovelas.

  3. It is pretty cool to see the influence telenovelas have had across the world. People are falling in love with this kind of television. Telenovelas allow hispanic culture to be seen worldwide and that sheds light upon the culture. I'm pretty sure South America's tourist attractions have been booming even more since the introduction of telenovelas in other countries and continents. People want to experience that culture up close and personal. It's amazing.

  4. It's funny that you bring up the concept of kpop because I'm an avid listener and viewer of the korean music and entertainment industry. I tend to sing along to the lyrics and suddenly pausing because I don't know what the heck I'm saying. I did notice significant cultural differences within the Korean, American, and Latino backgrounds but I did notice many similarities. For example, Latino telenovelas and korean dramas express extreme plots that would are no where close to realism but if it captivates the viewers' attention then why not?!

  5. Surprisingly I watch a lot of Korean dramas. They draw me in and I become addicted. As I began to watch my telenovelas, I noticed a lot of similarities in the way that the story line went with the falling in love and then obstacles and then ending in love. There are many cultural differences between the two genres but also many similarities. Overall, they continue to pull me in.
